The Twitter account of digital artist Beeple was hacked on May 22 and was used by attackers to promote a phishing scam.
MetaMask security analyst Harry Denley reminded users that the tweets posted by the Beeple Twitter account at the time contained a link to the Louis Vuitton NFT cooperative sweepstakes, but this was in fact a phishing scam that induced users to click and steal their wallet assets.
Scammers also use the account to post phishing links to other series of fake NFTs. About five hours after the phishing links were posted, on-chain analysis revealed that scammers used the first phishing link to steal 36 ETH, worth about $72,000 at the time. The scammer who posted the second phishing link stole a series of NFTs such as Mutant Ape Yacht Club, VeeFriends, and Otherdeeds, as well as ETH, WETH, worth about $366,000, bringing the total value of their stolen assets to about $438,000.
