Telegram founder Pavel Durov said in a statement that he personally bought a quarter of the newly issued Telegram bonds, investing tens of millions of dollars to support Telegram’s growth.
This is in addition to the hundreds of millions of dollars he has invested over the past 10 years to keep Telegram running.
Although Telegram’s massive growth means higher storage and traffic fees, Telegram is very efficient in terms of spending, and the monetization plan it launched last year is off to a good start.
He said that while Telegram is not currently profitable, Telegram is closer to being profitable in absolute numbers than its rivals Twitter and Snap.
Additionally, Durov also confirmed that he owns some Bitcoin BTC -0.57% and Toncoin. Durov stated that he would prefer to focus on his work and not own anything (except Telegram, some Bitcoin and some Toncoin).
He emphasized that hundreds of millions of people sign up for Telegram because they want an independent messaging platform that puts users first, and his responsibility and life’s work is to continue to provide this platform.
