The Ethereum ETH 0.01% development team announced plans to launch a new testnet called Holešky on September 15, replacing the existing Goerli testnet. The decision came after the team participated in a coordination call to launch the Holešky testnet.
Currently, Ethereum operates two public testnets: Sepolia (allows developers to test contracts and applications) and Goerli (allows protocol developers to test network upgrades and stakeholders to test running validators).
According to the newly proposed Ethereum testnet life cycle plan, Goerli will enter the long-term support phase in the first quarter of 2023. However, it will no longer be supported by the account team after the planned end date, expected in the fourth quarter of this year. Therefore, the next testnet is expected to launch in late 2023 in preparation for the shutdown of Goerli.
The launch of the Holešky testnet aims to provide developers and stakeholders with a robust testing environment for future upgrades and enhancements to Ethereum. It is expected to offer improved functionality and performance compared to existing testnets.
