In May, the FBI seized nearly $400,000 worth of cryptocurrency from Binance accounts linked to U.S. residents, according to an announcement filed this month.
Federal forfeiture documents show that the agency seized approximately $397,221 worth of Bitcoin BTC -0.54% and Tether from six Binance accounts between May 2 and 23.
Americans have been banned from using Binance since 2019, and some residents, including those in the states of New York, Texas and Vermont, still cannot access the exchange’s U.S. arm, Binance.US.
Account holders are located in California, Massachusetts and Virginia, the documents show. The assets were seized “in violation of federal law,” the FBI wrote in the notice.
